Pick the right one
You can't get most "real" credit cards before age 18 (and even then, you need income or a co-signer). But the right time to learn what to look for is before the offers start showing up.
The 5 things that actually matter
1Annual fee$0
Skip any first card with an annual fee. There are plenty of $0-fee starter cards.
2APRDoesn't matter IF you pay in full
If you'll carry a balance (don't!), look for under 22%. Honestly, just don't carry a balance.
3Credit limit$300–$1,000 is normal
A low limit is fine and actually safer for your first card.
4Reports to all 3 bureausYes
If a card doesn't report to Experian, Equifax, AND TransUnion, your score won't fully build. Most do — but check.
5RewardsSimple 1-2% cash back
Ignore fancy travel points on your first card. Cash back is real money, no math.
Types of starter cards
- Student credit cards: Designed for college students with little credit history. Usually no annual fee, small rewards. Easiest "real" first card.
- Secured credit cards: You put down a deposit (say, $200) and that becomes your limit. Almost anyone can get one. Great for building credit from zero.
- Authorized user on a parent's card: Your parent adds you to their card. Their good payment history builds your credit history. Powerful if a trusted adult has great credit.
Underrated tip
If a parent or guardian has a credit card in excellent standing, ask if they'd add you as an "authorized user." You can even leave the physical card at home. The history shows up on your file and you'll often start with a 700+ score.
Things to AVOID on a first card
- Annual fees over $0 (you don't need premium perks yet)
- "Subprime" cards with $75-$99 setup fees and 30%+ APR — these are designed to trap people
- Store cards (Macy's, Best Buy, etc.) — sky-high APRs, locked to one store
- Cards that require a "monthly maintenance fee" — run away
